The UAE has two separate immigration authorities , and using the wrong one for your visa check, fine payment, or extension will result in rejection. Understanding which authority handles your visa takes 30 seconds and prevents significant delays.
ICP , Federal Identity and Citizenship Authority
Full name: Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security
Covers: Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah
Online portal: smartservices.icp.gov.ae
Mobile app: ICP UAE (iOS and Android)
ICP is the federal-level authority. It maintains the national database of all UAE residents, visa holders, Emirates IDs, and UIDs. All biometric data and immigration records ultimately sit within the ICP system, even for GDRFA-issued visas.
GDRFA , Dubai Immigration Authority
Full name: General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs , Dubai
Covers: Dubai only
Online portal: amer.gdrfadubai.gov.ae
Mobile app: AMER (iOS and Android)
GDRFA operates semi-independently as Dubai's immigration authority. Dubai tourist visas, residence visas, and status changes are processed exclusively through GDRFA channels.

ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security) is the federal UAE immigration body that handles visas for Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah. GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs) is the Dubai-specific immigration authority that handles visas issued from Dubai.
Check your visa document. If it shows 'GDRFA Dubai' or was issued in Dubai, it is a GDRFA visa. If issued from any other emirate (Abu Dhabi, Sharjah etc.), it is an ICP visa. The issuing authority is printed on your visa document.
Use smartservices.icp.gov.ae for ICP-issued visas (Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and other emirates). Use amer.gdrfadubai.gov.ae for GDRFA-issued (Dubai) visas. If unsure, check both portals with your passport number.
No. GDRFA visas must be extended through GDRFA channels (GDRFA offices, AMER centres, or authorised Dubai typing centres). ICP handles extensions only for ICP-issued visas. Applying to the wrong authority will result in rejection.
evisa-uae.org facilitates UAE tourist visas that are issued by the relevant UAE immigration authority based on your application details and the emirate processing your visa. The specific issuing authority (ICP or GDRFA) will be shown on your approved visa document.
